OAK

European Oak has stood the test of time. For centuries it has been the choice of flooring in castles where it is still on display. Oak has had many other uses from tanning leather, making of ink to wine barrels. Oak has been popular for its honey brown color and durability, but also its ability to be limed and stained.

Not all Oaks are the same. The area, the altitude, the growth and nourishment of the tree will vary producing different properties in the wood. The further north the more gray and harder it is to dry. The further south, the softer and lighter it is in color. The Oak we import is from middle Europe, the closest to the French, which is needed to reproduce Provincial, Louis and Georgian style floors.

Some people say all oaks are about the same, but French Oak and the Oak we import are in the highest demand for wine barrel production. Comparing Oak in wines and floors is no different.

The Oak is available in 60mm & 75mm wide. In the 60mm width we carry 240mm, 300mm & 360mm lengths. In the 75mm width we carry 300mm & 375mm lengths.

We import the Oak in two grades - Select which is free of open knots and Rustic which has feature marks and blemishes suitable for staining. In both grades the timber has a good mix of straight, picture and mirror grain.
